FAQ

I had surgery yesterday, and my foot is throbbing and feels tight/swollen.

Swelling after surgery can cause significant discomfort. You may:

  • Loosen the straps on your boot
  • Loosen the outer ACE wrap (brown/beige bandage)
  • Do NOT remove or loosen the white gauze bandage under the wrap. Also follow RICE: Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation. Your dressing provides compression—elevating and icing will help.

How do I ice my foot with all these bandages on?

Do not remove your bandage or boot. Place the ice pack behind your knee on the same side. This helps reduce pain and inflammation.

I see some blood on the dressing. Should I change it?

A small amount of dark red or dried blood is normal, and you should leave the dressing in place until your first post-op visit.

If the blood is bright red, continues to spread, or the bandage becomes wet, please call the office so we can change and check it.

Do I need to sleep in the boot or post-op shoe?

Yes, unless your surgeon told you otherwise. You will be advised at your first post-op visit when it is safe to remove it for sleep.

The doctor said they would send my medication, but my pharmacy hasn’t received it.

Please call our nurse line at 336-663-4858, and your doctor will review and resend your medication.

I need a refill on my pain medicine, or I need stronger pain medicine.

Please call our nurse line at 336-663-4858, and your doctor will review and determine if changes or refills are appropriate.
