Hammertoe

You may notice it little by little—a toe that doesn’t lie quite flat, a bit of rubbing in your favorite shoes, or a new pressure point that wasn’t there before. Over time, that small change can become more noticeable, with the toe beginning to curl and feel sore during daily activities. This is a common condition called hammertoe, and while it can be uncomfortable, it’s also something that can be managed effectively with the right care.

What Causes Hammertoes?

Hammertoes can develop for several different reasons, including:

  • An imbalance in the toe muscles that causes the joint to bend
  • Tight or narrow shoes that crowd the toes
  • High heels that shift weight forward
  • A toe injury, such as stubbing or breaking a toe

You may also be at higher risk of developing a hammertoe if:

  • You’re female
  • You have a family history of hammertoes
  • Your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • You have arthritis, diabetes, or other conditions that can affect the feet

Treatment & Prevention

The earlier a hammertoe is diagnosed, the easier it is to manage. Prevention and conservative treatment options often include:

  • Supportive shoes with a roomy toe box
  • Toe stretches and exercises to help maintain flexibility
  • Custom orthotics to improve foot alignment and reduce pressure
  • Protective pads or cushions to ease discomfort and reduce rubbing

If the hammertoe becomes stiff, painful, or begins interfering with your daily activities, surgical correction may be recommended. Surgery can help straighten the toe, relieve pressure, and improve long-term comfort and mobility.

When to Seek Care

If your toe is becoming painful, harder to straighten, or is affecting the way you walk, you should be evaluated by a podiatrist. Hammertoes tend to progress gradually, and early care can make a meaningful difference in your comfort and mobility.
