Athlete's Foot

Athlete's Foot between the toes

Despite its name, athlete’s foot does not only affect athletes. This common fungal infection causes a red, scaly rash on the foot that often itches, especially at night. Blisters or open sores may appear in more severe cases. The infection can affect one or both feet and may even spread to the hands if scratched.

Athlete’s foot thrives in warm, moist environments. Wearing tight-fitting shoes, having sweaty feet, or coming into contact with someone who has the infection increases your risk. Public areas like locker rooms, communal showers, pool decks, and gym mats are common places for the fungus to spread, which is why proper precautions are essential.

You are at an increased risk of athlete’s foot if you’re:

  • Male
  • Wear damp socks or tight-fitting shoes
  • Share mats, rugs, bed linens, clothes or shoes with someone who has an infection
  • Walk barefoot in public areas, like locker rooms, saunas, swimming pools, and communal showers
  • Have a weakened immune system’

Prevention & Treatment

Most cases of athlete’s foot can be treated effectively with over-the-counter antifungal creams, often within two weeks. You can also reduce the risk of infection or reinfection by:

  • Wearing sandals in public showers, locker rooms, and around pools
  • Keeping your feet clean and dry, especially when wearing socks and shoes for long periods
  • Disinfecting shoes regularly to eliminate lingering fungus
  • Maintaining clean floors and shower areas at home
