Achilles Tendon Injuries

If you’re experiencing sharp pain, stiffness, or limited movement in the back of your ankle, you may be dealing with an Achilles tendon injury. These injuries are common and can affect anyone—from athletes and runners to those who simply stay active in their daily routines. Because the Achilles tendon is essential for walking, running, and jumping, even mild discomfort can make everyday movement difficult.

Types of Achilles Tendon Injuries

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury that occurs when the tendon connecting your calf muscles to your heel becomes irritated or inflamed. This often happens after repetitive stress, a sudden increase in physical activity, or tight calf muscles. Symptoms typically include pain, tenderness, and swelling just above the heel, especially after exercise or prolonged standing.

Achilles Tendon Ruptures

An Achilles tendon rupture happens when the tendon partially or completely tears, usually following a sudden or forceful movement. Many patients report hearing or feeling a “pop,” followed by sharp pain, swelling, and difficulty walking or standing on their toes. Ruptures are most common in sports or activities that require quick acceleration or jumping.

When to Seek Care

You should see a foot and ankle specialist if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain or Tenderness: Aching or sharp pain at the back of your ankle that worsens with movement or touch.
  • Swelling: Noticeable swelling, warmth, or redness along the tendon.
  • Stiffness or Limited Motion: Difficulty flexing or pointing your foot due to tightness or inflammation.
  • Weakness: A loss of strength in your calf or trouble pushing off with your foot while walking.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help you recover faster and prevent further injury.
