How Often Do Custom Orthotics Need To Be Replaced?

custom orthotics

If you have custom orthotics you may have wondered, “How often should they be replaced?” or “Is there an expiration date on them?” These are great questions and valid concerns.

Custom orthotics are molded specifically for your foot, and are used to help treat heel spurs, arthritis, neuromas, and arch pain. But orthotics are not just used to treat medical conditions; they are great for people who suffer from back pain and achy joints. Aligning the foot properly can prevent a plethora of aches and pains associated with incorrect posture and gait.

While there is no specific “expiration date,” you do need to have periodic evaluations to determine whether or not they need to be replaced. On average, custom orthotics last two to three years; much longer than over-the-counter shoe inserts that are effective for just three months. Because custom orthotics fit your foot perfectly, there is less wear and tear on pressure points on the orthotics that aren’t relevant to your specific gait.

Like shoes, orthotics can eventually flatten out due to wear and tear of daily use, which can do more harm than good if they’re not evaluated regularly.
